Spiders of Buxton Heath
There is quite a diverse selection of spider species at Buxton Heath, from the tiny Theridion pallens which guards its equally tiny egg case on the underside of oak leaves, to the Four-spotted Orb Spider (Araneus quadratus), that strings its web between bushes and trees to capture unsuspecting butterflies .. and visiting naturalists ! There are also several ground spider species, some of which chase their prey, while others make funnel webs, and just wait patiently. Other 'patient' species include the crab spiders that sit under or inside flower heads, waiting for butterflies, moths, and bees to land. There is no escape !
